Allen lavora su materiale di repertorio manipolato e su materiale di fiction superbamente "falsificato", con la complicità di veri intellettuali come Susan Sontag, Bruno Bettelheim, Saul Bellow. Il risultato è una parabola sull'uomo-massa, e un ennesimo geniale ritratto di schlemil, di piccolo ebreo che cerca il proprio posto nel mondo.
