Maria Antonietta (1938) in streaming su altadefinizione La vita di Maria Antonietta (1755-1793) dal fidanzamento e matrimonio nel 1770 alla sua decapitazione. All'inizio è un'adolescente asburgica isolata in Francia, che vive una vita da vergine nella casa del Delfino, un uomo timido e solitario che vorrebbe fare il fabbro. Marie scopre l'alta società, con l'aiuto di Orleans e dei suoi cognati. La sua follia raggiunge il culmine quando incontra un conte svedese, Axel de Fersen. La aiuta a vedere la sua inettitudine. Nella seconda metà del film, evita l'annullamento, diventa regina, genera figli ed è una governante responsabile. La vicenda della collana e la povertà generale della Francia alimentano la rivoluzione. Affronta la morte con dignità.
Il film fu l'ultimo progetto di Irving Thalberg, morto nel 1936 mentre era in fase di progettazione. La sua vedova Norma Shearer è rimasta impegnata nel progetto anche mentre il suo entusiasmo per la sua carriera cinematografica in generale stava svanendo dopo la sua morte.
